Agatha Crane

Agatha Crane can be built as Mystic or Seeker

Seeker

Deck on Ah_db, the main purpose of his deck is to gather clues, while also focusing on sealing, canceling, and ignoring chaos tokens.

Key Cards & Strategy:

  • Use new expansion cards like "Specimens" to cancel tokens and the "Oculus Ghost Camera" for clue compression.
  • To compensate for a base stat of 4, add Dr. Milan, Hawkeye Folding Camera, and rabit masks for stat boosts.
  • Cryptic Writings is used for money but can be swapped for two "Scroll of Secrets" if anotherr investigator has plenty of ways to provide him with money.
  • Insight Synergy: runs several Insight cards, including Map the Area, Drawn to the Flame, and Deep Knowledge. Cards like Burning the Midnight Oil and Correlate All Its Contents allow him to turn his free Insights into an investigate action.
  • Level 0 Spells/Skills: the starting purple (Mystic) cards include Read the Signs, Ward of Protection, and Promise of Power. Art Student to help grab the last tricky clues for his Hawkeye Folding Camera.

Upgrade Plans:

  • Eventually swap out Dr. Milan for Archibald MacVicar.
  • purchase Cosmic Revelation, Misdirection, and Confound (from the Hemlock expansion).
  • The rest of his experience points will go toward simply upgrading his existing cards, such as Scroll of Secrets and Deduction.

Mystic

Building Agatha Crane with a Mystic main class (from The Drowned City expansion) changes her from a standard, clue-hunting Seeker into a fascinating, high-tempo spellcaster.

Her core engine relies on a strict rhythm: Manipulate the chaos bag (by sealing, canceling, or ignoring tokens) to trigger her reaction, which allows you to replay an Insight or Spell event from your discard pile at the end of your turn. Because she has access to Spell events up to Level 3 from any class, Mystic Agatha can pull off devastating combinations.

Two distinct, highly effective archetype recommendations for Mystic Agatha leverage this unique card pool:

This deck turns Agatha into an incredibly stable, high-willpower clue-finder who can protect herself and pivot to fighting when necessary. It relies on the new Drowned City suite designed specifically to trigger her ability.

The Core Engine

  • Asset Suite: Eyes of the Dreamer (Investigate) and Breath of the Sleeper (Fight). These assets let you look at multiple chaos tokens and "ignore" the ones you don't choose. By ignoring a token, you automatically satisfy Agatha's reaction text, fueling your end-of-turn event recursion every single round.
  • The Economy: Mortar and Pestle + Robes of Endless Night. Replaying events every turn gets expensive. Mortar and Pestle generates resources when you or allies discover clues, and the Robes lower the cost of your spell events.
  • Allies: Katarina Sojka. She synergizes heavily with ignoring tokens, offering a backup trigger to ensure your event loop never stops. Arcane Initiate is also excellent to dig through Agatha's massive 35-card deck to find your spells.

Events to Loop (Discard Pile)

  • Read the Signs (Level 0–2): Your premier investigate tool. Play it normally to get 2 clues, then recur it at the end of the turn to get 2 more clues.
  • Drawn to the Flame: Testless clue gathering that you can play twice in a round if you have the sanity soak.
  • Spectral Shield: Gives you immense defensive safety, allowing you to easily shrug off enemy attacks or encounter damage.

2. The Chaos-Bag Dictator (The "Olive Loop")

If you prefer traditional Mystic token-manipulation, this build leans heavily into bending the chaos bag to your will, utilizing standard Mystic tech alongside Seeker testless events.

The Core Engine

  • The Key Asset: Olive McBride. Because Olive forces you to reveal 3 tokens, choose 2 to resolve, and ignore 1, activating her on a test immediately opens up Agatha's end-of-turn window.
  • Bag Fixers: Ritual Candles or Grotesque Statue. Olive can make tests risky since she draws more tokens. Ritual Candles mitigate the sting of symbol tokens, while Grotesque Statue gives you absolute control over what gets ignored and what gets resolved.
  • Signature Asset Priority: You must prioritize finding your Ocula Obscura. Because Agatha’s deck size is 35, include Backpack or Seeker draw power like Deep Knowledge and Preposterous Sketches to locate it early. Once Ocula is down, sealing number tokens ensures you always pass your tests.

Events to Loop (Discard Pile)

  • Voice of Ra: Because you are intentionally drawing extra tokens via Olive McBride, Voice of Ra turns into an absolute gold mine, often netting you 4 to 5 resources per play—which you can then do again at the end of your turn.
  • String of Curses: Agatha can drop an enemy, place a doom, play String of Curses from her hand to instantly defeat a non-elite enemy, and then recur it at the end of her turn to wipe out a second foe.
  • Working a Hunch: Testless, fast clue compression that bypasses nasty high-shroud locations entirely.

Key Upgrade Paths to Consider (XP

When you start spending experience points, focus on optimizing your economy and maximizing testless value:

Card Type Why It's Vital for Agatha
Cosmic Revelation (1) Event Amazing team support. Lets you look at the encounter deck or player decks; playing it twice fixes the mythos phase for the whole table.
Arcane Research (0) Permanent Grab two of these at deck creation. Agatha buys a lot of spells, and saving 2 XP every scenario is crucial for keeping pace.
Grotesque Statue (4) Asset The ultimate trigger mechanism. It guarantees an ignore effect on command, letting you choose exactly when to activate your recursion.
Word of Command (2) Event Directly searches your 35-card deck for Eyes of the Dreamer or Breath of the Sleeper to get your engine online immediately.

Pilot Pro-Tip: Mind the Timing Window

The biggest trap for new Agatha players is trying to use her recursion for a mid-turn combat burst. Because her ability triggers specifically in the end-of-turn window, offensive spells like Spectral Razor or Shrivelling played via her reaction won't help you clear an enemy before your turn ends.

Instead, use your actual actions during your turn to fight or investigate, and use the end-of-turn trigger to play defensive, utility, or testless clue events (Spectral Shield, Working a Hunch, or Deep Knowledge) to prep yourself for the Mythos phase
